This was a 4 day, 3 night retreat in Cambria, California (California's central coast). It was geared towards teaching quilting. I brought my 11 year old niece who has sewed a bit, but needed a boost. She came away a real sewer full of confidence and knowledge.

Although it is quilting, there were several sewing techniques taught and my niece learned a lot and I had a great time.

The retreat was held at a camp overlooking the central coast. We spend the days in a window filled room overlooking the coast and listening to sea lions bark on the rock in the sea. My niece completed a quilt entirely. She learned straight piecing, curved piecing, half quarter triangles, attic windows, borders, machine quilting, binding, and backing.

There were about 48 of us, mentors and students, men, women, and kids. The instructor is Rob Appell a spectacular seascape quilter. He was fun, funny, and extremely knowledgeable and very helpful.

The cost of the retreat, was $375 for both of us and it included all meals and lodging! What a deal! There were quilters, and garment sewers from California to Missouri each learning and helping their students and some working on their own projects.

I highly recommend his retreats. You can't beat the location, the cost, and the great learning/teaching experience.

Oh, did I mention the fabric for the quilts were free... donated by various textile manufacturers and there were 2 sewing machines (donated by Pfaff) raffled off at the end.

I have posted a few photos on my blog.

This sounds too good to be true! What exactly was the purpose? To teach mentor/teachers how to be better at it in a hands-on setting with instruction and demonstration from Rob? And was it really 2 for $375?? I just clicked over to the brochure and my questions are answered. Amazing! Now to find a mentee!
