For many years (pre-sewing) I have hated with a passion hanger loops in RTW. IMO, there is nothing worst that seeing a well-dressed woman (or badly-dressed) with the loops hanging on the outside. It's akin to having your g-string on display. So I have always cut the loops off when I get the purchase home. However, now that I'm sewing my own, I appreciate that hanger loops are necessary in some garments to keep them looking good.
Rather than sewing in standard long loops, I sew in tiny loops only 20mm long (plus seam allowances). I then have a stash of long ribbon loops on hand that I attached to the tiny sewn-in loop when I hang the garment in my wardrobe. I use either safety pins or loop them through figure of eight style. When I want to wear the item, I unpin the long loops.
I usually use ribbon or twill tape for the loops. |
What a brilliant idea, one i'm sure to use.Thank-you Dollieoh.

I totally agree that loops are ugly and a nuisance therefore you might like to see my tip for "Home made skirt hangars" which I posted on 5/6/06. That does away with loops altogether and skirts hang beautifully.
