I love the sailor style clothing for children, especially the button-bib front pants. However, that particular style is quite cumbersome for children to manage for bathroom access. It is also a lot of work for an item of clothing so quickly outgrown. I get the same look with NONE of the work by simply doing this...
1)Choose an elastic waist pants pattern that has the yoked front pockets (not inseam or patch). Bell the pant bottoms slightly.
2) Make the pants as directed by the pattern. For a sailor look white denim or twill or a navy gabardine wool (synthetic wool for children who are skin sensitive) provides the most authenticity.
3) Attach buttons along the curve of the pocket to mimic a button front. If you want it to look even more authentic, sew (but do not cut) buttonholes along the pocket edge before assembling the pants. See photo.
All the charm. None of the work. And no desperate struggle with buttons in the bathroom!
