I have a binding foot that came with my machine, but had no idea how to use it. Since I was working on a project that required bound seams, I decided to do some practice to figure out. This is what I learned:
1.I finally figured out that I needed to fold the seam binding over the raw edge and then push it through the slot on the side of the foot. You need to be sure and trim your selvages to the desired width first.
2. With the fabric in the foot, you need to slide it forward and back until the seam binding settles in the little channels in the foot. Lower the presser foot and take a couple of stitches.
3. With the needle down, adjust the set screw on the side so that the width of the opening is just enough for the fabric and binding to fit through. This will help the binding fold over the edge of the fabric. You will need to guide it with your fingers, but it works really well and gives nice clean finish!

I used premade seam binding (also called hem facing) to bind these seams. I buy it in large rolls from zipperstop.
However, you can use regular seam binding that is purchased or self made in any width by adjusting the screw on the side to fit the width of your binding. |

I love this foot, I hated doing bias tape until I discovered it. I also use it for FOE elastic. I can even use it on my Viking if I unscrew the foot.

Nancy, thanks for this tip! It always takes me a while (forever, actually) to try feet other than the ones I'm accustomed to, so this gives me incentive. Does it do well around curves also?

I haven't yet tried it with a curved seam, but I think it would do fine because of the way the fabric is held inside the foot.

I bought one of these feet (when I was going through my "foot obsession), and got frustrated with it. Now I know why! Thank you for the tip; I'll bring it back out and try again.
