Serger 911 class: Taught by Kathy Ruddy as part of the American Sewing Expo pre-show workshops. The class ran from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
This was a good immersion in serging basics, as well as learning some new techniques.
My biggest take-away was setting tensions on a serger when your tensions are off. The exercise went through a series of steps to obtain the perfect thread balance for each needle and looper. This exercise probably took an hour to complete. My BL machine has automatic tension, but I still found this to be a very useful portion of the instruction.
We did ruffling, serged a pocket, a t-shirt sample, and all-in-all had a great time. Kathy is a superb instructor and knows her stuff.
I will always recommend a hands-on sit and do it yourself workshop like this. Well worth the $90 spent for the class.
