PatternReview in association with the Needle Arts Institute is offering several on-line sewing classes.
So far I have taken the introductory overview class, and am halfway thru the Lingerie Techniques class. The downloads of the lessons are really good, the pictures and instructions are very clear. There is a bulletin board to post questions to the instructors, should you find something that is not clear. E-mails are sent out regularly with the download instructions, and a chat time is provided to have real time interaction with the teachers and other students in your class.
I like the fact that a reminder is e-mailed just before the chat, since in the heat of the moment one may forget that it's almost time to log on for the chat.
After the chat, a transcript is available for those who were unable to participate at the posted time.
My only problem is the chat is sort of like watching paint dry, since there is a necessary lag between posting the questions, and getting the answers from the instructors. Fortunately some of my PR pals and I were having a lively instant message conversation running at the same time, so all in all, I'd have to say that it was very informative and a lot of fun.
I'm looking forward to the rest of my Lingerie Techniques lessons, and even more to the mighty cool stuff I'm going to make after this class. |
Agree, agree, agree, agree! :) I didn't feel that way about the first interactive class, but this chat moved very slowly for some reason. (It was probably just better organized!) Still, I was reading incoming emails, checking something in the kitchen and even played a game on the computer once during this chat and I don't think I missed a thing. Thanks.

I have been interested in an on-line class - but was wondering exactly how helpful it would be. And would it be a waste of time and $$. Might give it a try - incidently, my home PC sits right next to my sewing machine - I often sew and surf - so waits would not be a problem.

Georgene, you should have got the referral discount for this review because it made me sign up!

I agree with the above statement. In addition, I would like to see millinery courses offered. Jacquie
