The girls at our high school all think they need to wear garter belts for their prom pictures, and my daughter told me about 2 hours before her prom that she needed one! We had some lace, ribbon, and elastic, so I figured out a way to make one.
1. Measure your thigh- cut a length of 2-3 inch wide lace 2-1/2 times the thigh measurement. Sew the short ends of the lace together to form a loop.
2. Cut a length a 3/4" wide satin ribbon the same length as the lace. Sew the ribbon to the center of the lace by topstitching near the finished edge on both sides. Turn under the ribbon 1/4" at each end, leaving an opening for inserting elastic.
3. Cut a length of 1/2" wide elastic 2" less than the thigh measurement. Insert the elastic into the casing formed by the ribbing.
4. Overlap ends of elastic and stitch to secure. Pull elastic back into the ribbon, so that it doesn't show. Distribute gathers.

This may not be any cheaper than buying one, but it sure was faster than shopping for one!

Cute garter. A garter belt is a little different than a garter. The garter belt is worn at your waist with elastic hanging from the belt. At the end of the elastic are the closures to attach to stockings. These contraptions were used before pantyhose and were very uncomfortable to wear. They are having a come back today. The instructions you gave for the garter are very clear and came out looking wonderful. You will probably be the go to person in your daughter's group to have custom garters made.

I disagree with Susan M. Wearing a garter belt and stockings is not only comfortable but a much healthier option to pantyhose. This has been confirmed by my doctor.

Thanks for the tip, it's more than a tip--like a self-drafted pattern!
