For those with extra time in the summer, Sir Sanford Fleming College runs an entire summer program of one-week courses in the town of Haliburton, about 2 hours north of Toronto. I recently attended the Art Fashion Design and Embellishment course, taught by Marsha Gettas (who also teaches part-time in the fashion department at Ryerson Polytechnic). Marsha is a wealth of information on design, fitting and embellishment. However, this is not a course for students who like lots of structure - after the first day we dived into creating samples and projects - Marsha was available for ideas and assistance but provided relatively little formal instruction.
The school runs many different programs - several women were there with either husbands or children taking other classes (e.g. Wire Sculpture for Teens)
By the fall the programs will be housed in a state-of-the art building (we were in an elementary school classroom).
There's lots of accommodation in or near Haliburton, ranging from bed and breakfasts to resorts. You will need a car or someone with a car (or really good walking shoes).
