While not a "how-to sew" class, this taught me how to make a pattern from my design. We learned the basics of flat pattern drafting and draping a design. We learned to make a sloper and design on a class manequin, size 8. Working on a manequin helped me to learn the process. Out of class many of us took our own measurements and created a sloper. Maya, the instructor, helped us with fitting our sloper. We then cut our sloper out of Oak Tag (paper similar to poster board) for use on our future designs.
I will now be much more confident when changing a pattern or using my sloper to adjust the pattern to fit me. But this is a side benefit of the class. I learned to design my own clothes. At the end of the class I had designed a skirt and a blouse.
I also loved seeing the designs of other people in the class. Everyone was so creative.

Is this part of the Master Saemstress program at URI? I live in CT and I have been thinking of taking that program.
Thanks,

Charee M. said... Christelle, This is a continuing education class. Read - no grades, no tests, etc. I am not familar with the Master Seamstress program at URI. But I suspect any certificate program would be more intense. 8/19/03 8:03 PM
