Last weekend, I spent four wonderful days (along with 12 other women) at the Palmer/Pletsch school in Portland, Oregon.

It was FABULOUS!!!!

I took the fit workshop. It is based on "Fit for Real People" and taught by the authors, Pati Palmer and Marta Alto.

First, a bit of background. I have been a lurker on Pattern Review for a number of years. I have taken several online classes through PR and loved them. My problem has been all theory and no practice. I read about fit and sewing, but have not taken the leap due to fear of failure. I have purchased loads of beautiful fabrics and tons of great patterns. I have the Lutterloh system. I have Benina My Label. It still just sits.

Finally, I said "Enough". I had been drawn to Palmer/Pletsch and have purchased most of their books and DVDs.

My husband encouraged me and I bit the bullit.

I'm very glad I did!!

Day 1: We were given a brief overview and the basic McCalls fit pattern to work on. We were all measured and told which size we should begin with based on our upper bust measurement. The results were quite a surprise to most of us. We cut out and pinned together the bodice and then got a quick lesson on reading wrinkles. We were instructed on the alterations necessary and how to do them with our handy FFRP as a backp reference. The great thing about this step was the variety of shapes and sizes of the women in the class. We were able to learn about a plethora of alterations. The rest of the day was spent altering both the bodice and the skirt of the fit pattern. This was to be our "road map".

Day 2: We altered patterns of our choice as long as they were not princess seams (saved for day 3). We had a fashion show of the various Palmer/Pletsch patterns and ways to change them up to get completely different looks.

Day 3: We were given a dart rotation lesson. At this point we also altered princess seams which are very flattering on most figure types (especially large busted women). We also got a lesson on interfacing and why you use specific types for specific jobs. The rest of the day we altered, altered, altered. The time flew by.

Day 4: Our final day. Everyone altered their patterns knowing that this was the last day that the experts would be personally available. Believe me, it was a mad rush! We were also encouraged to fabric pin fit as well. This is needed because fabric obviously has its own peculiar tendancies and any tweaking can be done easily.
After class, we were graciously invited to Pati Palmer's historic home for dinner, a tour and certificate presentations.

Every day, we were also treated to a delicious catered lunch.
Time absolutely flew by. I was mentally exhausted every day and crashed by 8:00 pm every night! I learned SO much.

I would highly recommend this workshop. If you are able to go, consider including all the additional recommendations mentioned on the site: Hotel, sight seeing trips and shopping trips. They are really worth it.
Also available are other fit, sewing and tailoring workshops. I plan on going back soon.

Now, will I finally cut into that fabric? Yes. I think so. I developed a new found confidence due to this FAB clss.

Thanks for everything Pati and Marta!!!

Wow, this sounds like a great class. I wish it wasn't so far away from me!! Maybe Pati and Marta would consider going on the road and hitting Denver or the Midwest? Just a thought!

That sounds like a wonderful class! I'm glad you were able to attend and bring your confidence level up. I'm sure it was there all the time and just needed a little push. Looking forward to reading your future reviews. And who knows, maybe I'll run into you somewhere wearing something you created since I'm in your area every so often :-)

I went to a four week class with Marta because Portland is "local" for me and really enjoyed it too. I can only imagine how exhausted you were after your "sewing vacation". Now go cut your fabic! ;-)
