Californian bra-maker and swim-wear expert Marijane Johnson came east to the Boston area for this workshop - and it was amazing! From 9-5 for two days our class was immersed in the details and construction techniques of bra making. Marijane is an outstanding teacher - and just a generally fun person to be around which make the class a treat. The first day was spent on basic construction techniques, with plenty of focus on finding and using the proper materials - everything from cup material to plush elastics, picot edging, and of course, little bows. (After all... it's not really lingerie unless there's a bow)

This class is based on lessons from Beverly Johnson's outstanding book _The Bra-Makers Manual_ and we used her line of patterns as our starting point. Marijane was attentive to all of our needs and great about demonstrating confusing points as many times needed until it was clear.

By the second morning, everyone had finished one complete bra which allowed for fine-tuning of fit. Again Marijane's expertise was invaluable as she showed where to cut and slash patterns, ease fullness, or lower bra positioning to get just the right fit for each participant. From there we were all able to make a second (or third!) bra to check the revised fit and work on our construction skill.

She also brought MANY samples, including her first-ever self-made bra, so we had plenty of visual aids to help throughout the workshop. In addition, she had supplies on hand available for purchasing so that we could continue bra-making at home right away without having to struggle to find comparable materials to what was used in class.

The workshop itself was held at Unique Boutique Boston in Billerica, MA - and it's an absolutely fantastic location for sewing workshops. Plenty of space, lighting and great atmosphere - plus the owners Jan and Lorrie are always super welcoming.

I left this workshop confident in my ability to make many more great-fitting bras and can't wait till she's back in the area teaching again.

I would highly recommend anyone having the chance to take a class with her to go ahead and do it! I've also taken her swimwear class and panty class (also at Unique Boutique earlier this year) but the bra class that I just finished today was amazing enough that it prompted me to write a review! Marijane does have a blog at - her other classes get listed there as well.

Sounds like a really great class! Nothing like that in MT but I sure would like to attend a class like yours. The hands on instruction sounds invaluable. Very nice review.
