When pinning a garment recently, I wove the pins in and out of the fabric several times, both to anchor them and so that I could see the seam line I was creating a little better. I got the fit to where I wanted it, laid the garment out on the table and ran my soap sliver along the pins. It made a perfect dotted line for me to sew on. Not sure how that would work with chalk as I have given up on chalk in favour of low-tech soap slivers, but it should work fine with a disappearing ink pen.
