I just learned this too late. I'm working on jeans and the metal zipper is scratching the work surface of my sewing machine. When I realized this was happening I just covered the zipper teeth with 2 inch wide blue painters' tape. I suppose you could also loosely baste fabric over the zipper if your garment fabric could be damaged by the adhesive on the tape.
