If I have a large amount of fabric to be gathered, I will take up uniform pleats all along my seamline before gathering the fabric. This helps to decrease the amount of gathering necessary, and it also makes the gathers look much more precise.

This is also a great way to "cheat" if your pleated skirt or the bodice it has to attach to has been altered to fit and the uniform pleat markings no longer match up - a bit of gathering will mask the unequal pleats.
