Somehow the mantel of Official Family Christmas Stocking maker was passed to me, and each year I curse all lettering and small decorative pieces I have to cut out from felt.

Usually I print out a template of the letter/shape and clumsily pin it to the felt, then fumble to cut out around the piece and pins. What a pain in the stocking.

But this year I had the glue stick out for another project so I applied it to the back of my paper pattern pieces, stuck it the felt and started cutting. Magic! Stays in place while it needs to, peels right off w/out damage or residue when you're done.

Hooray glue stick!

And you can glue the felt pieces to the stocking. If sewing them on, wait ten minutes before stitching, to allow time to dry.
