When constructing a heavy garment (flannel) on your serger, raise your presser foot and put your project under--then go... Don't try to just feed the beginning of your project under the presser foot--especially with a knife... Your lower layer will bunch up. And then your seams will not match up.
Ask me how I know!! I've done it several times now. :(

Mine ends up in a big knotted mess that won't move! Sometimes I remember to not start at very end. Good tip.
