This was an afternoon into the evening (until everyone left) sit and sew with Sandra. The advertised pattern to use was her V1165 blouse with the 18 tucks in the front. A couple other people in the class chose another of her patterns to work on, both blouses and Sandra was fine with that. We were all working on similar techniques.

To start off we were measured and Sandra selected a size for us and then asked "when you buy a blouse, what's wrong with it?" For me, my blouses crawl backwards off my shoulders and the bust point is never where it's supposed to be. She quickly sketched the two alterations I needed to make, and I was off and running. She did the same with each student with lots of individual attention. And as we worked she made the rounds and continuously asked us if we needed help, and encouraged us to ask, etc. It was very comfortable.

I didn't like the look of the blouse pattern and never would have purchased it except for this class, but I wanted fit and wanted to learn new techniques, so I went with it. I folded out all the tucks in the front, so that my blouse had a plain front. Good thing I did or I never would have even gotten to the point of trying on the blouse. Those tucks are fussy.

She taught us how to do her collar technique by making the collar and facing one piece and cutting on the fold. I already do my collars that way (Nancy Zieman) so that wasn't new to me. However she showed us how to roll up the blouse into the collar so that we could stitch the facing down mostly on the machine. Neat trick and it's explained in the pattern, but makes a lot more sense when you see it.

She also taught us her placket technique. The first thing to do was to add an addition 3/8 in to the fat side of the placket. (She said Vogue has a standard placket that they use no matter what so we needed to make the addition and I'm not sure if that suggestion is in the pattern). Then there is plenty of fabric to fold under on the front of the placket and it covers the underside nicely. She also encouraged us to clip within a couple of threads into the corners, necessary to make the placket turn nicely. She suggest little stitches as you did the corners to prevent fraying. Great technique and I will start using it from now on.

I mostly finished a blouse, no buttons or holes, no hem and no cuffs. I did mine in plain white muslin because this was a learning experience, I wanted a TNT pattern, not necessarily a finished blouse. I did get my TNT from the class and I'm very happy with it.

I will say another lady in the class had made the blouse in 7 variations and she brought them in. That blouse looks much different in person. You can vary the number of tucks, or leave them out. The patterns pieces fit together well and it fits perfectly with my alterations.

I did learn a couple of new techniques and I enjoyed being with people like to chat about sewing stuff.

I tried to attach a picture of me with Sandra in my muslin, but wasn't successful.

Thanks for the great review. I've never been in one of Sandra's classes, but just from watching her on the old cable shows, I know that I would love to attend any class she teaches. Her enthusiasm is contagious -- she makes me feel as though I can do ANYTHING!
