This was an all-day hands-on workshop held at the Original Sewing and Quilt Expo in Worcester, Ma--It may be offered as a "More the day before" option at other Original expos. THis cost about $125, and was well worth the price (it also included lunch). We made half a tailored jacket, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.! One side of a jacket, that is--including a double-welt pocket, notched collar, sleeve, with sleeve head, etc. and inserting the lining as well. Mary Ellen's take is the speedy sort, using all fusible interfacings and tapes, but she carefully explained which product to use where, and why, and also taught us some excellent pressing techniques to build shape into the various parts of the jacket. She's a low-key teacher, very concerned about getting the information across and seeing her students master the techniques, so everyone left with that sample jacket half completed. This wasn't an "entertainment" class at all, although it was among the best fun I've had at a sewing expo; it's very empowering to walk into a class feeling like you don't know anything, and to walk out with some very good results and a thorough understanding of the topic. I highly recommend this for intermediate sewers (which I am), or advanced beginners. If you know how to sew a straight line, you're home free!

I agreee. I absolutely love Mary Ellen's methods. I have made several jackets for myself and suits for my husband. She takes tailoring into the realm of very doable. Is that a word?

I attended a class of Mary Ellen's a few years back - a lecture rather than a hands-on but extremely informative nontheless. I also have her video - it is very low key and intended to be used as you sew. I love her welt-pocket technique!
