I purchased a self healing cutting mat, scissors and rulers at a drafting supply store. The mat was on sale for less than $10 for a 18" x 24" size and extra long scissors for about $5 that I use for fabric cutting.
Just a thought to check out other options.

also, think about picking up notions when you are on holiday overseas. Example, basic buttons are a penny apiece/per hundred in Kuwait. Invisible zippers are just under a dollar apiece in Bkk. (Try the zips, for quality first though.)

United Arts & Education is where I got my French curve set, flexible ruler, wax-free tracing paper, onion skin paper, soft leaded pencils.... Way cheaper than Joann!

Good tip--I bought two large rolls of tracing paper from a drafting store at a very good price too.
