"Easy and Elegant Capes and Wraps" is my first online sewing class. I think it was a good one for me to try because it is at my skill level. I am learning new techniques, but I don't also have to hone any new skills at the same time. This online class has instructions, but otherwise it is up to the sewer and others in the class to discuss issues and help eachother work through difficulties.

The subject is timely, has everyone seen all the ponchos and wraps in the stores? Nearly every store in my area of Michigan has at least one version of the patterns I have learned. Living in Michigan, these will be great outerwear Spring and Fall and great inside wear and over the coat wear during the winter months. The class is not finished yet, but these are our lessons so far:

Capes:
Ruana click here for my sample of the basic Ruana in loose weave raw silk
Variations

Rectangle Cape
Diamond Wrap click here for the version I made for me that fits my daughter instead (still beautiful design!)
Alternative shapes for the basic ruana
Diamond Ruana in velvet with beaded trim on all outer edges, click here for a view of the back.
Round - DS's saint costume
Belted Cape Stole

Details/Techniques:
Hem Miter
Pockets
Fringing - plaid poncho and DD's version
Flounces
Hood - DD's saint costume

The instructions show how to measure on yourself to get the dimensions. so far we've had one actual pattern. These are all basic shapes, and the drama is added with the details and fabric choices. I did not feel the need for patterns; I really enjoyed the freedom of making what I wanted (and having it actually work out!)

I'd really reccommend any person taking this class to be comfortable with the idea of making basic designs based on draping fabric upon yourself and using math. Who would enjoy Easy and Elegant Capes and Wraps? A person who is patient, a problem solver, a lover of fabric, brave enough to cut into the stash, and ready to embellish the result.
