There is another review on this class, written in 2004 by Janie Viers, and everything she said still holds true, so I won't repeat it.

Ray teaches both Basic and Advanced classes. I just completed the 3-day Basic class. It gave me the confidence to service and maintain my own machines, so the cost of the class will be easily covered in just a few years by not having to pay for routine preventative maintenance for my (several) machines. Ray emphasized that the majority of problems caused by malfunctioning machines can be corrected with the procedures learned in the basic class. And, following the procedures taught will reduce the likelihood of major repairs becoming necessary as well as increase the lifespan of our machines.

The Advanced class covers more complicated repairs and would be appropriate for anyone considering a sewing machine repair business.

Ray teaches a systematized approach to servicing machines. He demonstrates how to test and adjust all the different areas of the machines, step by step. First this, then that. Do not adjust this area until AFTER you have verified that that area is functioning properly. He tells lots of entertaining stories about "repairs" that caused more problems than they fixed, just by being performed at the wrong time in the sequence of events.

Ray wants his students to understand how all the systems in a sewing machine work together to form beautiful stitches. Once you understand how the machine should work, then you can determine IF an adjustment is required and then you figure out HOW to make that adjustment. "They all work the same way," he says, as he walks around the classroom tables where electronic Elnas sit beside 1960s Vikings and ancient Featherweights.

On his website Ray mentions that he is planning fewer classes in the future due to his heavy travel schedule. Anyone considering taking this class should do so soon. I learned so much in this class that I'd love to take an Advanced class, maybe next year. Right now classes are held in various locations around the U.S.; information can be found on his website. http://www.whitesewingcenter.com/repairclass.php

Oh, it's up there, under the camera icon. Maybe I put it in the wrong place. http://www.whitesewingcenter.com/repairclass.php

What a great opportunity, even to take care of your own machine - thanks for the info.
