Sewing Custom Valances by Sue Sampson and Ellen DeLucia
This was a very timely class for me as I need to make Valances for my living room and wanted something beyond the pocket type valance I have made in the past.
The instructors have been designing and writing the instructions for MCCalls Home Dec in A Sec patterns for a very long time. Over 4 million patterns have been sold worldwide. That is a lot of patterns.
You can select one of two patterns, McCalls 5286 or 6299.

There are 10 lessons:
Designing Your Valances: What to sew, fabric choices, quilting your valance, enhancing your valance and lining your valance.

Measuring your window: Taking measurements and understand the different layers,

Setting up your workroom: Analyzing your space, covering your table, workroom equipment and stapling. (Since I do not do this for a living I will never need a designated space for making curtains but it was interesting to see how each woman uses their space)

Customizing pattern Pieces: Adding length, adding a symmetrical band, adjusting width and modifying the pattern.

Cutting & seaming with cellophane: Using cellophane, placing your print, finding repeats, cutting insets, assembles your pattern pieces and serging your seams. (They use cellophane to create whole pattern piece so you can match the design elements on your fabric. A very clever idea.)

Banding & Cording: Making your own strips, the banding strip, the piping strip, sewing the banding and sewing the piping strip. (Lots of tips on how to cut and sew banding and piping strips.)

Constructing the Valance: Putting the layers together, sewing the lining and finishing touches.

Creative Variations: Adding bands, gluing wide bands, machine stitching, fabric applique, finding your canvas, the motif, fusing the applique, adding gemstones and making covered buttons.

Mounting the Valance: Putting the mounting together, folding the valance, stapling the valance, adding piping, adding the board cover and installing the valance.

The lessons are full of information and the instructors explain everything very clearly and the camera work is very well done. There are lots and lots of tips to make your sewing go faster and information about when it is ok to use short cuts and when it is best to follow traditional methods.
