ASE is in late September at the Suburban Showcase Expo Center in Novi, MI. It has been around for 20 years, I have attended for the last 5 years. Offering a variety of classes, shopping, demos, contest, exhibits and fashions shows, there is a lot to see and do. I'm a fashion sewer, but quilters, embroidery and home dec sewers will enjoy it too. At the 2013 expo I took classes with Gretchen Hirsch of Gertie's Blog for Better Sewing, Angela Wolf, who teaches on Pattern Review and Gail Yellen, who teaches on Craftsy. Last year I had a class with Susan Khaljie. The course fees for are very reasonable.

Shopping includes a variety of fabric offerings, such as Haberman from Royal Oak, MI, Vogue Fabrics from Chicago and Wool House from Toronto, to name just a few. There are a number of booths for quilters, but not being a quilter, I don't really look there. One of my favorite booths is Nifty Thrifty Dry Goods for their wonderful vintage and vintage inspired buttons and trims. There are so many booths, I think you could find almost anything for sewing at the ASE.
All the major sewing machine companies are represented, as well as pattern companies and sewing publications. Every year it's a tough decision on how much time to spend in classes vs. shopping. It seems to get bigger every year, so comfy shoes are important. The 2014 ASE starts September 26 and I plan to be there.

I was invited to the Sewing Expo by two friends who between them have attended every event. I am hooked! Every year it seems to get better and better. The shopping is phenomenal, and the lessons always offer some new technique or sewing gadget I HAVE to have. Will definitely attend in 2014 and highly recommend it to sewists and quilters - or crafters in general. There is something for everyone.
