I have used primarily three methods:

1. Flip your piece over so you can run it back through the machine and serger over the previously serged edge. It is basically a manual form of a backstitch.

2. Fray check! (Look for my tip on how to make fray check softer!)

3. Knot off the serger threads close to the fabric. Using a large eyed needle, thread the remaining thread tails back through the upper or lower looped threads for 1-1.5 inches. Trim any excess threads.

I use #3 myself often as it's quicker for me. Sometimes I just quickly zig-zag with my sm that is usually on anyway - I find this easy and quick also, especially since I usually don't have fray check available.
