This past spring I took a bathing suit class at Club Tissus in Laval. Dorothee Barnes gives the class. It is in French only. I loved this class. The bathing suit class is a 4 week class.
We used a base pattern from Bouclair Studios. This is an old pattern that is OOP. The good thing of having to modify an older pattern is in fixing the pattern to suit today's fashion, you really learn how to modify the pattern. You learn all about pattern making. This is the most important part of the course I think. She guarantees you that the suit will fit like a second skin, and it does! We learn about straps width, length, crotch width, truck length, bust lines, darts, pleats, elastics, etc.
The second reason you should take this course is that you learn all about Lycra. You learn about stretch, matching the stretch of the fabric to pattern sizing (a less stretchy fabric will require a larger size..) how to work with it, how to cut a pattern out, how to sew without pinning, etc...
I don't want to spoil all the tidbits that I learned in this class, all I can say is that it is so worth taking this class.
