I can't be the first person to come up with this, but getting nice, crisp collar points seems to be an issue for a lot of people and this is a simple technique that I've been using for years and thought it might be useful to others--
When I make a pointed collar, I first sew the long back seam only--I then trim and grade the seam allowance, press it toward the undercollar, and understich on the right side of the undercollar fabric, close to the seamline, just as I do on facings--
Now I fold it right sides together and stitch the front edges of the collar--After grading these seam allowances and trimming them to the point, the collar will turn easily with very little bulk at the point to be smoothed and I rarely need to use anything more than an ordinary wooden point turner to achieve a flawless collar--
I hope that others might find this method helpful--C |
Thank you for posting this technique -- I definitely will try it. I'm rarely really pleased with my collar points -- always feel they could be better.

Great tip. I first saw this technique done on the tv show 'Sewing with Nancy' [Nancy Zieman], and it really works.

Thank your for this idea -- I'm just about to make the first "real collar" I've done in years.
