My husband thought of this. We had a spare cheap gravy separator, the kind that has a long nose that pours from the bottom of the cup to pour off the broth instead of the fat sitting on top of the broth (if in doubt, see the link). It's perfect for filling the iron.

It's a great suggestion. And defatted water would certainly be better for our irons.... ;-)
