This is probably pretty obvious to many, but I finally got my collection organized and thought I'd pass along my method.
I only sew with Gutermann and often Joann's has a half-price sale. When that happens, I rush over there and end up with 5 spools of navy and none of the orange that I need for a project.
I finally sat down and inventoried my collection by inventory number, which is on the end of the spool (I did have way too much navy). I took this paper over to Joann's and bought the colors to fill in the gaps. Now, I didn't buy one of EVERY color, but only enough to get a fuller palette. I then completed my sheet with the colors I bought and hung it up. The plan is to make a note when I use up a spool so that I can go back to Joann's to replenish my supply. Hopefully this will keep me organized and always have the color I need to do a project. |
Neat idea. My navy problem is the opposite, I always think I have plenty and then find I only have dog ends of a couple of reels, usually late on Saturday when shops are shut!

Interesting idea. I have my patterns & fabric inventoried, but not the thread. I might have to correct that!

I'm trying to weed out my Dual Duty thread and replace it with Mettler. I grab a few spools whenever I have a coupon, and they are invariably the wrong choices. The inventory idea is great.

great idea! I have this for my embroidery threads -- why didn't I think of it for my sewing threads! Does anyone know if there is a color chart for the sewing threads?
