Stabilizers useed for machine embroidery can make adding buttonholes much easier. A small piece behind the fabric keep the fabric from shifting during the button hole stitch.

Two good choices are: tear aways and wash aways.

lESS EXPENSIVE IS TO SAVE USED FABRIC SHEETS AND USE THEM TO STABALIZE BUTTONHOLES OR EMBROIDERY. CUT OFF EXCESS.
