I was ready to sell my sewing machine and fabric stash on eBay.

Then I attended a four-day Cynthia Guffey fitting workshop. I was hesitant about attending because I did not know if my skill level (or lack thereof) would allow me to get the most out of it. I think a potential attendee should have experience making different types of clothing (pants, shirt, jacket, dress), simply because there is no time to study guide sheets when making muslins. You CAN take the time, but for me it would have been a waste to spend time learning how to SEW instead of how to FIT.

My first pattern was a pair of Claire Schaeffer pants ( Vogue 7468). Two and a half sessions later, I had a mock-up of a well-fitted pair of pants. (We only made mock-ups during the workshop.)

After that, I fit a Kwik Sew vest (KS 2499). There weren’t many alterations needed on that or the subsequent Kwik Sew jacket (KS 3174). The alterations were made directly on the pattern. (Note: I don’t think I have ever cut out Kwik Sew pattern pieces! I usually leave the sheets intact and trace them.) Since the pants took so long, it was good that I had a couple of patterns with less fitting issues. The general consensus was that pants do take longer to fit, but they are a breeze to put together once those fitting issues are resolved.

For me, the one-on-one attention was invaluable, and I got plenty of it because there were only five in attendance (that’s a full class). I could not have learned this from a book alone. I needed the reassurance.

Cynthia is very patient and is willing to help in any way. Her humor quickly put us at ease. What a personality she has! And, yes, we got a few recipes from both Cynthia and Peggy, Cynthia’s friend who graciously allowed us to have the class in her home and tended to our needs (coffee, drinks, additional Guffey stories, as well as personal stories). She was so kind.

It really helps that Cynthia herself takes your measurements. In another class I took, the students had to measure each other, and I feel as if the measurements were not as accurate because people seemed to be afraid to touch each other. Cynthia's not afraid of anything!

If you’ve had even a little experience making various clothing items and need help with fitting, I HIGHLY recommend Cynthia Guffey’s workshops.

I have been to many Cynthia Guffey seminars usually 1 hour but my Sewing Guild has hired her to give a 6 hour presentation in Bellevue WA this Saturday. I know she will be fabulous and we have a great turnout for this event.

Our Houston ASG chapter hosted her a few years ago - she was fantastic! Grab any opportunity to see and learn from her!

Reedy I am so glad you got so much out of that! I live around the same area, and am anxious to take one of her classes. I'll have to keep an eye out for the next one.

I will definitely go again. MaryT, she's having workshops in June and September this year (in Baton Rouge). It *is* nice being close. I had to drive about 25 miles; it was very convenient for me.

She is a great teacher. I learned so much from her. I just got my books on measuring and pants fitting about 15 minutes ago. I can't wait to dig into them! -Ann

I see these comments are from 2005. Our ASG Philadelphia Chapter is having Cynthia Guffey on Sept 7th 2013. A chapter near us had her 2 years ago & I learned so much. She is funny and a innovative teacher.
