This is an online class offered by Loretta Gjeltema on her Fitting Tips Website. The class was taught by Judy Barlup. This class was a construction class, and did not include any fitting information. The class included Judy's Pants Design and Construction book as well as the special notions that were needed for the techniques covered in the class. Students were encouraged to select a pattern with a flat front, darts and slant pockets, and that already fits you. This perfectly described the JSM pant pattern, which I already had in my stash but had not attempted.

The class was set up as 10 lessions, spanning 5 weeks, with live chats every Tuesday night and Sunday afternoon. Lessons were released 2 per week and discussion boards. Judy promptly answered every question. Loretta assisted with fitting issues as they arose.

The first lession as to Prepare the Pattern. When I first read this lesson, I was a little miffed. Why so much information about prepping a pattern?? Seven pages with tons of color pictures were included. This was great information. I had never thought so much about getting the pattern ready before. We proofed the pattern to make sure all the seams would match, we balanced the leg of the pants, we shaped the hem and so on. The next lesson was Layout and Cutting. Very detailed information about getting the fabric ready, laying out the pattern and cutting. Third lesson was inserting the fly zipper. This was worth the entire class fee is one lesson. It had been years since I had done a fly zipper and to tell the truth I avoided anything with a zipper at all. This technique is great, it is perfect everytime, and it does not require a zipper foot. Lesson 4 was on darts and slant pockets. Again great info, including how to make sure your pocket does not gap when you wear your pants. Lesson 4B is about Crotch seams. Lesson 5 was on the belt loops, I skippped this one as I don't tuck in my tops so I didn't add the belt loops to my pants. Lesson 6 The Waistband. Eight pages of infomation about attaching the waistband. Every pair of pants I have made now includes this waistband treatment. Lesson 6B was finishing the belt loops, again I skipped this entirely. Lesson 7 Hook and eye closures. Detailed info on how to attach the hook and eye. I opted for a button closure on my pants which was not covered in the lesson. Lesson 8 on hemming. It covered marking the hem and several options for hemming the pants. The final lesson 9 was on Pressing the finished pants.

The amount of infomation contained in each lesson was amazing as well as the VERY clear color photos that Judy included were great.

Judy is an awesome teacher, if you have the opportunity, take a class from her, do so. She assisted each of us with fitting issues during the live chats, even though the class was about construction. Judy extended the class for over two weeks to make sure everyone had a chance to finish the pants and has extended an offer to continue to answer questions for the students.

All in all I learned some very good techniques from this class. Before this class I was afraid to make a pair of pants with a zipper and waistband. I have made several pair since the class and must say that I highly recommend this to others if it offered again.

Liane, this is a great review of an incredibly thorough class on pants construction. I also took the class but a busy life prevented me from participating as much as I wanted. You've given an accurate account of the lessons and detail involved. I had a bit of an insider's peek, as I helped Judy take some photos for her lessons and listened to her describe she and Loretta's desire that anyone who participated in this class to have a great online experience and come away with real value. Judy is a great teacher and anyone who has the opportunity to come into her fold benefits from the experience!
