Weekend residential course in Northamptonshire - courses run throughout the year - both w/ends & week long courses.

You can, if you have the stamina, fit 33 hours of sewing into this weekend course.

The beauty of the course is that there are no structured classes, but rather you have an expert on hand to solve whatever problem you have or to show you how to improve what you already know. Similarly, by bringing your own machine, whatever you learn can be easily done again at home.

Within our group, we had a wide cross section of patterns, fabrics & people “shapes”. This meant you learned a lot from watching Jeanine (our tutor) helping classmates too.

I’m not the most experienced sewer, so I benefited a lot from Jeanine’s expert help. Nevertheless, some ladies had 40 years experience, but still felt they were learning new things.

I took along a lined jacket pattern that I had made 3 times but wasn't happy with - within minutes Jeanine had solved my fitting issues, adapted my pattern and guided me onto cutting my pinstripe properly.

Throughout the weekend I learned tips on construction & technique, and now have a master jacket pattern I can use again & again. I even mastered bound buttonholes.

Perhaps by osmosis, my confidence has also improved and I feel better able to tackle fitting & construction issues on other garments.

I compared jacket No 4 to the others when I got home and could see a step change in quality, so I'm very pleased. The jacket had lost the homemade look that had dogged my previous attempts and fitted perfectly, I’d compare it to any high quality RTW.

As a more independent opinion, perhaps the best complement is that some ladies have been coming to her classes for over 10 years, and make sure to book way in advance to ensure a place on the next course.

I’d highly recommend this course, it is friendly & relaxed, and you learn exactly what you want/need to, rather than reliving your sewing classes from school.

PS – the accommodation & catering is very good – with the added bonus of the historic building/location.

Smallbod this workshop sounds ideal for those of us who were thoroughly put off by their teacher at school. I too didn't sew for more than a decade after leaving school, and wish I had the skills. Will look for the contact details for the workshop. Thank you so much for posting this.
