Hi,

seen a bernina 1000 special for sale locally. It has 7 stitches and comes with accessories, manual and soft cover. It is approx 16 years old and was serviced last August.

Is this a good model and as good as the current 1008's?
I don't need many stitches, as it will live in our outdoor home office wood cabin and be used for straight stitch, zigzag and free- motion work.

I did a quick look in the reviews but there's not many on this machine.
Any view-points appreciated.
Thanks

Carrie

Hi there, I had one and liked it. I sewed my wedding dress on it (among other things). Wonderful stitch quality. Mine was a rotary hook, and I'm not sure that they all are. If this one is, you will need special Bernina rotary bobbins which are pricey and specific to these machines. I was told that the rotary hook 1000S had a sewing speed of up to 1000 stitches per minute, faster than most home sewing machines (even many Berninas and other high end models). The reason I sold mine was that it doesn't have adjustable presser foot pressure and I felt that was important for knits. It's great for quilt piecing. I never tried it for FM work (I'm still a rank beginner at that). Always was straightforward and trouble free for me.

Thanks for the reply Virginia

I am really temped by this machine, however I am not sure about the Rotary vs CB hook and how that affects the stitch.

The auction ends in 1hr so I have to make my mind up soon!

Well I am amazed.
I have just bought a Bernina 1000.
My opening bid won, that never happens to me!

Hopefully I will collect the machine over the weekend and test her out, its only about 15/20 mins drive away.
She's apparently been serviced and the receipt for the service is with the machine. Comes with all the feet I might need apart from a darning foot which I'll have to buy.

Now I am so excited.!!

I remember when the 1000 Special came out because the upper-level 10- series were still being sold A Bernina dealer in Houston told me the rotary hook was going to be introduced by Bernina, which it was on the wide-swing models. Bernina was trying it out on the 1000 as a precursor to putting it in the next model series. I never looked at one because I already had two CB models and tons of bobbins. I would love a followup or a review with how you like it, and particularly the stitch quality.

Hopefully will be able to do a review when I've tried it out.

I've emailed the seller for contact information/address etc.
But have as yet not had a reply. Got a feeling that this transaction might not happen.

Time will tell.

Gosh, I never even heard of a 1000--- there's always something new to be learned. You need a rotary hook to do automatic thread cutting. Have fun!

I have this machine. It's all mechanical and has a 4-step button hole. I bought it at an estate sale. I love that the feet also fit on my Bernina 1090. I just sewed on the 1000 yesterday. It is a basic sturdy machine that will probably long outlast my computerized machines.

Collecting it today at lunch time.
Very exciting!
Looking forward to getting her home and testing her out.

Let us know how you like her. No bells and whistles. I was missing "needle up or down" feature when sewing with my 1000 yesterday. But she is very reliable and sews a beautiful stitch. I have whipped thru what seems like miles of Waverly fabrics making curtains on her and she just keeps on going & going. Will be interested to hear how yours is doing...
