Does anyone have a dedicated coverstitch machine?  If so, do you like it?  What brand?  Do you mind telling the cost?

Thanks.

Jerris,

I don't, but see Gigi's review of her Bernina 009DCC.

I'd be happy to have a serger at all! :D

Yes, Jerris, I have two 009 machines and love them.  I ended up with the 2nd one because this lady bought it, never figured out what to do with it and sold it to me for $200!  My mechanic said it had never been used.  Couldn't pass that up so I keep them threaded with different color threads.

I used to have an Elna Pro 905DCX and a Bernina 2000DCE.  It was a royal pain (to me anyway) to convert them back and forth for cover stitch.  I am much happier with a dedicated machine and it speeds my work right along.

Can I ask a dumb question?  What is a coverstitch machine and how does it compare to a serger?  Marie

Marie, if you have any RTW knits (even undershirts) in your closet take a look at the hems:  what looks like twin or triple needle stitching on the outside and serging on the inside.  That is a coverstitch.  There is also a top and bottom combination coverstitch that looks like serging from both sides.  A coverstitch machine has a chain looper and two needles, there is no blade and no second looper as in a serger.  Some TOL sergers have the additional capability of doing a triple needle and/or a top/bottom coverstitch.  I personally like the convenience of having a stand alone coverstitch machine - it's definitely a luxury item but if you sew with knits a lot it will certainly be a useful addition to the sewing room.

I noticed that in Rennie's review of her Kwik Sew Denim Jacket she said she used the coverstitch for some of the topstitching.  I didn't know it had no knife, so I had been wondering all this time how it worked.   :0

Yes, Rustybobn, this works well as long as the layers are not too thick and there aren't any sharp corners to turn.

Speaking of coverstitch machines, I saw the Babylock coverstitch machine at the expo today.  It just came out in August and does the 2mm, 4mm and the triple with jet air threading like its big sisters, Imagine and Evolve. Show price $899.00.  If I were going to get a coverstitch machine this beats the Bernina hands down, IMHO.

I purchased a "Gemsy" cover-stitch machine from E-Bay for $129; it is quite a heavy machine, but works quite well and I'm very pleased with it.  I believe, at this price, it is an older model, as there are more "modern looking" models shown on the Gemsy website, but as I stated, I have been quite pleased with the way it sews.

People that have the Bernina coverstitch only machine love them. I almost bought this machine but I wanted the triple cover stitch. I bought the Elna 744 serger with 3 coverstitchs including the triple and also the chainstitch for several hundred dollars less than what the dealer here wanted for the coverstitch only machine. It is a simple switch over to coverlock..just add a plate and change needles..the needles tilt back for easy changing. It also has a tension release for unlocking threads for easy removal. This serger also has automatic tensions so there is no fiddling with them. I can't say enough about this serger. It is only a 4 thread but does more than some 5 threads do. If someone is interested in a coverstitch only machine I would advise getting it on ebay or used from a freind because they are pricey..usually more than a serger. I believe Brother now has one that is quite inexpensive however.
