I am considering buying a Bernina 180E from a private seller. They are asking $500. Is this a fair price? It comes with the embroidery unit, but it appears they were being sold in the early 2000s. What are your opinions of the 180E? Can you download embroidery off the internet on this unit? I currently have a Viking 425, which has been a good machine. I recently started looking around for a sewing machine that does embroidery and I specifically wanted a machine that I could download stuff from the internet for.

Even though the 180E gets mixed reviews, that is a good price for it, considering others I have seen are going for 2-3 times that much. I can't comment on the embroidery aspect, as I prefer to use a stand-alone machine to embroider.

I can't speak to the price, but in order to download embroidery designs and use them in the Bernina, you either have to download designs in the Bernina format or use software that will convert to the Bernina format, and not all embroidery software will since Bernina is very tight on its embroidery format.

I'm also not familiar with the 180, but if it takes embroidery cards instead of floppies or a USB stick, you will need a card reader/writer that works with Bernina cards and the Bernina format.

Hopefully someone will come along that can augment my sketchy info.

Thanks for the comments! I did buy the machine. I haven't had a chance to sew with it yet though. I'm excited to start playing with it tomorrow!

I hope you like it. I have the 170 which which came out at the same time and is the TOL, but without the wide stitch width. I don't think you can get any more software updates on it, but you might take it in to see what version it has and get the last one available if it doesn't already have it on both the machine and the embroidery module. You can download embroidery designs, but you'll need a computer with a serial port to attach to your machine and download the software to it. I think Artlink will do it. I've done it exactly twice about 3 years ago. The designs have to be .art and whatever version of artlink you have. I have version 4. I think there is a version 5, but I couldn't find a copy. Enjoy and have fun!

Just a heads up - Artlink version 6 is now available as a free download from the Bernina website. I have Editor Lite version 4 too, but Artlink is nice to have around too since it doesn't require the dongle.
