a Saturday night save another reason for having more than one sewing machine

Date: 1/19/13 10:02 PM I'm in the process of making twirly skirts for little girls. Thing is, if you are making many skirts with flounces and ruffles, you don't want to be doing it all by hand. So, I got a low shank generic ruffler...which does not work on this so-called heavy duty Singer (that I got when I needed something fast to finish repairs to my SIL's leather motorcycle jacket after my Pfaff got injured in the process). My SIL had given me her mother's ancient Singer, but I discovered it no longer works...the motor revs but it does not sew. What to do? What to do? Ah yes, my mom's Singer Stylist! Bingo! Once I got the foot attached, it took maybe a half hour of adjusting machine stitch length & tension and the trying various combinations of settings on the foot, but I have the gathering ratio I want and am so happy! It looks like I am going to be churning out several skirts so I wanted to have a dedicated ruffling machine. My serger can then do most of the construction with the finishing on my Pfaff. How frustrating it would have been to have discovered the generic ruffler was useless (or that I could only use it on my Pfaff which I prefer not to for a host of reasons). -- Edited on 1/19/13 10:02 PM -- ------ "We don't see things as they are, we see them as we are." I agree, having a backup machine is a must, especially if you sew for others, or with deadlines. Date: 1/20/13 9:25 AM I agree with you that depending on what you are sewing, additional machines make the job so much easier. A few years ago I made 15 ruffled aprons for Christmas gifts. I had the same scenario as you; it tok awhile to get the ruffler set just right on my janome 4900 and it stayed there for a month. It was so much easier not to have to get that ruffler set up each time. In my younger years, I did not have the luxury of having more than one machine and sewing was not as easy; that was a shame because I had less available time to sew but still loved to make clothes for my children when they were young. I have an old Singer Stylist. She lives at the river cottage now. Got her at Wal-mart over 20 years ago. She is actually a solid, heavy machine. She was my second Stylist. Gave the first one to my MIL. She used it for years(quilted a lot).

I'm about to make a ruffled crib skirt and am oh so familiar with the task of fine tuning the ruffler foot. I have several other projects in progress and now I will set the ruffler up on a separate machine. This will prevent me from trying to hurry through that adjustment process!
