I had to share... today I stopped by the quilt store to browse and get a demo of the new 8 Series Bernina 830 machine. This is one incredible machine (and it should be since it is selling for $12k!)

My machine is a Babylock Ellageo ESG3 and it is great. But when you see something like the 830... what a difference.

The engineering that has gone into this machine is incredible. Everything is well-thought out and done with precison. It is huge... I mean, really, really huge. With the embroidery arm attached, it is 39 inches across! The machine (without embroidery arm) is 38 pounds.

With the stitch regulator and dual feed options, it has it all. The new bobbin is very large - like the size of a quarter and is a drop-in on the front of the machine. It holds 40% more thread. This allows the bobbin to be changed without removing the hoop. The machine has over 1,000 utility and decorative stitches.

Anyway... it has been a while since I have been truly blown away by a sewing or embroidery machine. Yes, there are lots of surprise and delight type of features on some of the new models from the other manufacturers, but this machine is over the top. If you have a chance to demo one, be ready to be wowed! Even DH was impressed and he could really care less about sewing.

38 pounds, I had no idea!!! Maybe Bernina should throw in a 430 or 240 to carry back & forth for classes!!! Just a thought.

I cannot imagine lugging it around... but I have been imagining using it all day long!

I've heard it's a beauty. I'm waiting for the 840... pretty much the same machine sans the embroidery. The price is really a killer, eh? Even if I could afford it, I'm worried it might not fit in my Koala table at that length. And I thought my 931 was heavy... sheesh. Do you happen to recall who does the machine software and operating system? Is it now proprietary? Microsoft did the 200e and 730. They know computers but I thought their implementation of sewing software did not really grasp how people work on a sewing machine.

I don't know who does the software -- it is not called out in the brochure that they gave me at the store. I didn't think to ask this when I was there.

The software is now using the Bernina OS, like the 630/640 machines, much, much better than the Microsoft OS on the 200/730 machines!

The machine is really a dream to sew and embroider on. I've had mine for several weeks now and have really been putting it through it's paces.

The 820 that is due out shortly is not quite the same machine. Besides the inability to embroider, it's missing one of the functions that is absolutely one of the best, most awesome feature on the 830, and that is the multi-directional stitching, stitch editing, and tapering feature.

This is nothing at all like previous models (200/730) could do. It's really amazing. You would need a dealer to sit down and just demo this feature with you for a couple of hours to do justice to what you can create. Just one small super simple thing is the ability to take a single decorative stitch, send it to the embroidery side, and fill an entire hoop with that stitch.

You can create new stitches, sew them in any direction on the fly while you're sewing. No more needle down, pivot and continue.

I only saw the demo and I could tell that it was a machine like no other.

What have you been creating with your new machine?

I've made 2 pairs of pants (muslins actually, working on that perfect fit), embroidered a couple of aprons, embroidered an entire quilt top and pieced the rest, it's ready to be quilted now.

And of course, I've gone through tons of scraps playing with the new features :).

CJ - which design pack is that quilt? It is absolutely beautiful!!! I couldn't find the info on your blog but (hangs head) I only had time to scan and not read every single word.. And of course that big hoop on the 830 will make life easier.
