How would I make stand-alone embroidery bookmarks or lace snowflakes? I was told to simply embroider my design on water soluble stabilizer and then dab away the excess. Still, I have questions:

Will the design stay stiff enough afterwards? If not, what do I have to do?
Do I need particular thread?
Are only certain types of designs recommended? Which ones?

I'd appreciate some suggestions.

Thank you.

Claudia

I went to an Anita Good Design hands on 2 day event. They did bookmarks on felt in the hoop. It was a nice bookmark. Unless you want a lace bookmark you don't have to use water stablizer unless you want to. I not sure if they remain stiff. I don't think so. You could starch it so it does.

Check the Brother 780D thread just below this one. I explained how to do free standing ornaments, which is the same thing.
You can spray with water to disolve, the stuff that dissolves will seep into what ever you do have beneath them and might stick a bit so be sure to rearrange while they are drying. Some have pressed between books covered with plastic between paper towel, just before completely dry. There is usually enough of the sticky stuff that they are fairly stiff, but a shot of spray starch works well also.
There a lot of designs for free in the internet and on CD's sold at dealers.

I have some K-Lace ornaments and they are just stitched on water soluble stabilizer. They are stiff as long as you don't wash all the stabilizer out. If you launder them thoroughly, then they will have to be restiffened somehow. You can use water soluble stabilizer scraps dissolved in water. I've stitched other laces out on poly organza with water soluble stabilizer. You will then have to trim closely to the design and also very carefully.

I just give mine a soak in a bowl of water till they don't feel real sitcky anymore. Like Marilyn said you want some sitckiness to harden the design. After I soak it and dab excess water off it I lay it under something fairly heavy so it won't curl.

Embroidery Library has A page full of instructions here at this link. Just click on any of the ones that indicate 'lace' and you'll find more info that you could have dreamed of.

What a great set of instructions. Thanks for posting this link, Doris, and also for everybody else's input. How many days is it until Christmas--gotta get busy.
