I am making Kwik Sew patern 2727 out of a medium weight (beautiful) fleece I purchased from Pico Textiles.

What is the best way to put in a zipper? I heard I shouldn't be using an invisible zipper in fleece. Should I use interfacing on the inside of the fleece for stabilization?

Thank you,

Kathy

I just looked at the pattern, KS2727, and it already has a zipper. So, you should follow the KS instructions. KS have great instructions!

I do not use interfacing on fleece. Just a fold under of the fleece itself will serve as a stabilizer. I usually use a sport or metal seperator zipper. The hard part was finding the right color and size zipper.

I'm sewing a robe, I don't think a sport zipper would feel very comfortable. I have a nylon zipper.

I was just wondering if sewing a zipper in fleece was different than sewing one into a woven fabric. I am looking for hints from our experienced sewers.

Kathleen, Wonder Tape is your new best friend! I have used this to insert zippers in fleece jackets and it is fantastic. It is water soluble and will disappear in the laundry. In the meantime, it does a great job of 'basting' your zipper in place while you sew. I didn't use any interfacing for my zippers and they turned out just fine. The Wonder Tape helps prevent the stretching that can sometimes occur with fleece. It should be available at Joann's or Hancocks or other fabric shops. HTH

Thanks Patti. I was wondering about the stretch. I'll give this method a try.

Kathleen, That is good advice that Patti gave. I just put in 2 separating zippers in jackets, and used Wonder Tape in one of them to baste. Be careful though, not to get the wonder tape wet and then get that wet tape on the zipper teeth.
