I am making myself a maternity band using knit fabric and it's a pain to work with. Any tips? I have a Viking 835. Using a serger is not an option since I don't have one.

Thanks!

How, specifically, is it being a pain?

Using a stretch needle and increasing your stitch length a bit helps. You may need to hold the fabric very slightly taut, front and back. If you have a single hole needle plate on that helps as well.

I know a couple of people on here bought your machine earlier in the spring so maybe they will see this and chime in with their settings for knits. Do use a stretch needle; a longer stitch or a slight zigzag. I am pretty sure you can adjust foot pressure on your machine-if you can lighten the pressure. You might try one of the stretch stitches to see if that helps. If you use a straight stitch plate (with a single hole) you can only do a straight stitch but it will keep the fabric from being pulled down into the machine. You may have to fiddle with the settings a bit. If you still can't get it, a thin piece of paper between the fabric and the feed dogs can help too (you can use tissue paper which is cheaper than some sort of stabilizer). I didn't have a serger for years (I remember when they hit the market). I now have one and will always have one-it makes sewing knits so much easier!

Some people have posted pretreating the fabrics with gelatin or cornstarch to make it more managable.

Okay thanks! I am using a stretch needle. I am having trouble in that it keeps rolling up. I washed and ironed it and it's not any better. I went back and put in lots of extra pins to help so maybe it will somewhat

Thanks again! I will check out the link, Elcue!

Some knits roll quite a bit on the cut edges. Heavy starch will help, but so will lots of pins at the edge.
