Hello all
I was loooking to see if someone could offer some advice on the best way to avoid a bulky waistband in the Loes Hinse gore skirt. I am using wool and did view C http://www.loeshinsedesign.com/categories/skirts/gore.html

I wanted to line with a tricot lining and I first basted the lining and the skirts together and then serged the elastic on and folded down. I then tacked it down at each of the seams. It seems really bulky and doesn't lay flat. Any recomendations?

Well, I wouldn't want to suggest that you frog-stitch all that work , but I would have put the elastic inbetween the lining and the fashion fabric.

There is a very nice article in Threads, I think one of the 2004 issues, about elastic waistbands, including lined versions and how to make them not bulky. I remember how nice they looked with the seam that joined the fashion fabric and the lining at the top of the waistband and the elastic between the two. Don't remember other details, but maybe someone can look it up for you. Mine aren't handy right now.

It's in Threads January 2004, Number 110.

These are the headlines:

1) Eliminate seam bulk with a deep cut-on casing. The lining stops at the top of the pant. Only elastic is inside the casing.
2) A narrow casing gives lightweight sheers a lightweight finish. The lining and casing are folded together for a narrow waistband.
3) Use a partial-stretch waistband for a softly tailored look. The front of the waistband is flat, the back is gathered by the elastic, but only elastic is in the casing.

I'm so glad you asked this question, because I'm getting ready make the same type of lined pants.

My hope is to sew to the very end. They'll find my head slumped over my precious Kenmore 19606 and have to pry the seam ripper from my cold, dead hands.

I just did something similar on McCalls 2586- I just cut off part of the casing allowance, sewed the two layers at the top RS together, sewed the elastic in a circle, sandwich the elastic between the two layers, and sew a seam under the elastic.

Thanks so much for the advice. I did get the March Threads issue to review. I will post pictures once I have restitched the waistband!
