Although today's essay is about an engineer with a musical talent, I think this applies to all of us, too!

Oops! Thanks for the heads up, Carolyn. (BTW, we're bummed that you aren't able to join us in Denton this week!)

Leslie, thanks for posting. I am an NPR addict. I can't believe I am missing this series. All Things Considered used to be my driving home companion, but now that I am not working, I only catch bits and pieces, and listen to Morning Edition.

I loved the essay. I believe doing something creative is vital to my happiness. I don't consider myself an artist by any means, but I am always into something. Whether it's planning my garden, or plotting my next home decorating or sewing project. I am baffled when people don't have a hobby. I am sure we all know people like this. Sometimes I envy them. They have so much free time to catch up on their shows, their house is always clean, etc., but I wouldn't have it any other way.

I am glad Mel went back to the piano.

Wow! Excellent essay! Very thought provoking and supportive at the same time! Yes! It's okay to be creative doing things I love!

Edited to add: It also reminds me not to make judgments about other people, snap or otherwise! One just never knows!

Thanks!
Peg

Leslie -- what a lovely essay and so true. I am personally acquainted with technology co-workers, past and present, who have enormous creative outlets such as music composer, singer and Elvis impersonator, cartoonist, piano teacher, ballet dancer, and so forth. I even know one who loves to sew and learn foreign languages. It is fascinating to learn what people love to do when they're not at work. Doing cerebral things at work all day, I love the concreteness of the type of creativity involved in sewing.

BTW, you all have a wonderful time in Denton. Maybe I can come next year.

I was lucky enough to catch ATC today, and liked the various musical bits* in the first hour so much that I stayed for the rebroadcast (public radio here repeats the first hour after they play the second). That's the best belief essay I've heard so far!

*truck horns playing "Stop in the Name of Love" & the ATC theme, & a hip-hop violinist whose name eludes me for the moment

Great find, Leslie! I love it. And I know a surgeon who plays terrific blues on the piano whenever he can!!

Leslie, I heard this too, and immediately thought of sewing, and PR. Thanks for posting about this!
