Hands down, Calvin Klein. I like him because he can make what appears to be a simple garment look interesting and flattering. I am also drawn to classic, clean lines.
(Can you tell I am bored? My second topic of the day. I really should be planning my dinner, and cleaning my house.)

Does Diane Von Furstenberg count as an American designer?? :-)
If not I'd say alive: Michael Kors, dead: Halston.

Hmmmm - housework and planning dinner or thinking about sewing and fashion - I'm not sure which I'd choose
I adore Victor Costa and Oscar De La Renta

Roland Mouret! I love him! I want to sing Morrissey songs and watch "The Women" with Roland Mouret! I have such a mad, platonic crush.
I also like Peter Som, my SF homeboy.
eta: I think of a designer as American if they show in an American city. Roland Mouret used to be London. And he's in NY now. Yeay!

Oh hard question. I have really been taken with Project Alabama.
Do they count?

(Please note I cannot afford and never had any designer wear except one dress from Ralph Lauren and it was so simple and such a killer dress, sorry I grew out of it- I used to be 100 pounds.)
Several great dead ones, but I 'll keep to the living. Anna Sui, she does funky that you can wear and still look sane. Love DVF. When I am in a more classic mood I like Lauren's lines. Karl Lagerfeld always designs like he loves women, (I swear some designers hate us) I love his work. His latest Fendi collection was cool.
You didn't ask about Paris, but I do love Christian Lacroix; I love color.
Edited to add Oscar de la Renta, cmarie12 reminded me, how could I forget, another man who loves women.

Michael Kors - hands down favorite
Michael Vollerbracht (sp?) - now designs the Bill Blass line
Oscar de la Renta
Loved Calvin Klein when he designed his own line.
Favorite costumers: Edith Head, Adrien, Norell (I know you didn't ask this last but they are long time influences!)
