I'm 5 months pregnant, and trying to make a few simple items for myself. There aren't many maternity patterns available, and they're not very fashionable, imo.

So - I have been gathering some simple wardrobe patterns, a-line elastic waist skirts, etc. Simplicity 4176 looks like a great one for maternity tops, with some help: http://www.simplicity.com/dv1_v4.cfm?design=4176

I know I need to alter it a bit - so here are my questions:
The pattern is for wovens (cotton, silk, etc.), and includes interfacing.
1. Can I make this in a knit instead (will the neckline sit funny with a knit)?
2. Do I just leave off the interfacing when I do it this way?
3. Another post suggested sloping the front down 3" for the tummy - that sound ok here?
4. Even with the knit, I may include more fabric in the belly - can I just fit a size 14 top & back with a 16 or 18 belly?
5. Any other comments or recommendations?

Thanks so much! There is a lot of cute maternity stuff out there, but I'm trying to save a little money! Also, the shops in my area seem to have all black - I like black, but I also need some summer colors! Plus, let's face it, I just like to sew! After a few things for myself, on to cute baby things! Burda has some really cute BOY patterns that I can't wait to try :)

Thanks & soon I'll have to actually post some reviews!

Angi, any top with an underbust seam is a great candidate for a maternity top.

For the neckline, if you choose to use a knit, you will definitely need to stabilize the neckline -- fuse interfacing to edge, bind it in foldover elastic, attach lingeried or other picot-edge elastic to it, use a facing, etc. A search on the boards will give you more information on finishing techniques for knit necklines.

I would not simply make the tummy a larger size -- you need both width and length in specific areas for a maternity alteration (not just a bigger size all around), and you'll probably need a lot more than 3 inches if you plan to wear the top through the full 40 weeks. The maternity tummy alteration is really very easy to do.

As for altering the top for maternity, here's a link to one of my maternity reviews, where I altered a nonmaternity top for my pregnant belly. Contained in my review is a link for maternity alterations as well as photos of my altered pattern pieces, which should help you visualize how to alter the top. Hope this helps!

Jackie - I'm so glad you posted a pic of that upside down L belly modification on your pattern review. I've seen the HGTV directions before but I could never picture what that meant! Now it makes perfect sense.

Hi Jackie - thanks for posting your review with the modification - it makes so much sense now when the written instructions were so unclear. I am altering a pattern Simplicity 3751 http://www.simplicity.com/index.cfm?cat=1&type=1&sec=5&startrow=1 but I really only added length to it as there was a lot of ease. I can see that this would be better as I added length to front and back, which I didn't need. We'll see how it makes up and then I'll try it again your way!
