Just received my first bundles from Fabric Mart and on the whole. I'm really pleased with them. But...I did get a piece of blacl & white giraffe fur. It feels really nice and is flexible, but does this type of fabric need any pre treatment? I've never sewn with fur before. Is anyone wearing giraffe nowdays? I was thinking maybe a vest to go with some of the black fabric I received. Any suggestions? The 3 yards of red silk dupionne(sp) more than makes up the cost of the 2 bundles I ordered & I did get several othe fabrics I can use.

The first and only time I ordered from Fabric Mart, I got two mystery bundles due to getting one free and ordering one. In each, I got two large pieces of fabrics I hated, and these were identical in each bundle. Obviously, they were dumping it. I donated the one type and decided to use the other as wearable muslin fabric for now when I'm a bit heavier than a want to be. If I don't wear them, fine. But, I can get the fit down. I prefer the grab bags at Wazoodle and bundles from Michaels. More predictable outcome and better quality, though I did get some high quality fabric in the FM bundles too.

I think a vest and maybe a coordinating hat would be great in fur. You could make some of it into a purse, too, if you're into that kind of thing. If you have a DD or DGD, you could make some cute stuff for her with it, too.

I believe the fur is completely synthetic so it probably doesn't shrink, but as for pretreatment I suggest you e-mail Sue at FM and ask her if it can be washed or if it should be drycleaned. If the listing is still up on the web site, there might be some info there.

My latest bundle (the four different types of 3-yard cuts of fabric for $25) is all winners--black poly/triacetate that's a waffle-weave with a bit of stretch, sheer rayon flowery print on black, deep green silk crepe, and a grey/taupe suiting that acts like poly/triacetate. Lovely stuff.

thanx for your posts. i'll have to try wazoodle and michaels.. i ordered the super bundle for $25 and got a free mystery bundle..in addition to my 3 yds of red silk, i received a sheer purple flower on turquoise(which i will use next summer), a black rayon, a deep red poly and a chanel-like boucle white squares with red and black. the more i look at these the more i like them. the mystery bundle is a mystery. in addition to the giraffe, i got a lining fabric(i think) that measures 78x88, a black chenille damask print with silver threads that i actually found on the website, a nice white crepe, and a mint green crepe type. nothing with stretch....but a least i'm color coordinated..i can use most every thing except maybe the lining..its very stiff..so i guess i'm really lucky.

jannw,

I actually purchased the giraffe "fur" in the brown colorway. Haven't made it up yet, but I have a Ralph Rucci-esque jacket in mind. He does some longer, boxier almost stiff-looking jackets that are very chic, often with a reptile-skin or other patterned leather skirt or top. I believe the fur is dry clean only. Mine is similar to a pony skin, a very flat fur with high-low sections.

I also have that giraffe fur, and I plan on making a hobo bag. I think it's quite funky!

thank you Liana and ACB. I'm sure it's the sames fur..the more I pet it,the better I like it. Its very soft .A hobo bag is a good idea, I was thinking my tried & true PawPrints Kimono vest. I've recently lost some weight, but don't know if I can carry off an essentially square large print.. thanx for your comments and ideas.
