There was a pretty lively discussion of Unique patterns in the comments section of the Website review some time back.  We haven't heard much regarding the outcome for about 6 months now.
The concept of getting your body scanned and having a pattern custom drafted for your figure is very appealing.  No wonder the company got overwhelmed by the initial response.  I wonder how things are going now, and if anyone has recent experiences to share.

Georgene, there was a VERY lively (and unflattering) discussion on Sewing World too.  Have you read it?  I would be apprehensive about trying this.

Gigi, I hardly ever spend time at SW.  I tried doing a search but couldn't find the topic.  In any case, there isn't much recent talk about this.  This scan technology may be the same one that they use for custom Levi jeans.  The NYC store has it, as well and the San Francisco flagship.  There is also a men's suit manufacturer in Texas I think, trying to develop a custom suit business with it.  It's a great idea, but perhaps there are a few bugs to work out yet?

If you go to SW and do a search for Unique Patterns in Patterns, Fitting, Alterations - two discussions will come up.  They are both recent (the oldest is May 2003) and interesting.  Search for "topic only", otherwise you will get too many results.  This company has had so much bad press re. their customer service that I'm not sure if it's a good idea that they are our sponsor...hopefully, they will prove me wrong.

I do not know the company personally but reading about it at SW I had the same thought about why this one would become the main sponsor.

Yes I find it worrisome that I have not seen anything positive about this company for a while now.  It is such a great idea, one would hope that they have worked out their difficulties.  If so, we should have a few replies from some who have gotten good results.  Even the Vintage Pattern Lending Library has/had (?) an agreement with them to do Unique versions of their patterns.  They are definately good at partnering up with groups that would be interested in their product.
Perhaps the new patterndrafting software available these days has given more people the power to draft their own patterns with their measurements, rather than relying on an outside service to do it for them.

I love the concept of this bodyscanner.  I would just like the measurements from it!  I know that with the old method of the "unique" patterns, where you just sent in your measurements, they had a bit of quality control difficulty.  I have not talked to anyone who has used the scanner, though.  I almost did at the Worcester expo.  Perhaps if they are there next year I will do it.

Does anyone know if the you can get your measurements from the scan?

Anne, some of the people over in the SW thread mentioned that the measurements were wrong. I don't think you can get just the measurements; you have to buy patterns too.

I must admit that, except for the "cool factor," I'd rather drop $200 on Pattern Boutique and get a friend I trust to do the multiple measurements. Most of what I've heard about Unique has been negative, from the ungodly amounts of ease in many of the patterns (pointing to incorrect measurements?) to the lack of customer service. Being a geek by trade, I tend to be an early adopter of new technology. Not here, though.

Georgene - here are links to two SW threads about Unique.  May 2003

Kate, thanks for posting those links.  I just couldn't seem to do that yesterday!

There are several ladies in the ASG here who signed up with Unique before the scanning (when you just sent your measurements) and they told me that they had to wait so long for their patterns and they would arrive and be wrong and they'd have to wait again and so on.  I think they finally gave up.
