I'm hoping to get my machine before Christmas, and was thinking that if I can get the embroidery end down decently, I'd make some stockings for the family (plus all the family critters), and maybe do some pet beds with designs on them. Does anyone have any pictures of items like this you've done? I'd like something to spark the creative side a bit. ;)

I don't have any specific projects to show you, but I suggest checking out the site Sew Forum, and click on "Show Off Your Projects". People post pictures of a wide variety of things they've made, including stockings and pet items. You can search within the forum, too, to find specific kinds of things.

It's another addicting sewing site for me , I check it everyday to see what new things people have made. If I spent less time on the computer, I'd certainly get a lot more sewing done

I feel your pain! I have to check the free designs every day and then that leads to looking at the projects others have done. I could have probably made myself a complete wardrobe by now!
On the quick projects--I would shoot for stockings. I wish I had my embroidery machine when I made ours! Our names are on them in fabric paint!

Thanks! That's what I was talking about, people that have made things that turned out beautifully (or had problems and had to do their best to overcome) that have posted pics.
I made a bathrobe for my hubby a couple weeks ago, and am in the beginning stages on a doggie coat for our chihuahua and sleep shorts/pants for me...I can't WAIT to get my E machine so I can do "the little extras" that make the projects truly unique!

Oh don't get me started on the free designs!! I have more designs than I can sew in several lifetimes!

I second the vote for making stockings - if time runs short, you can buy plain stockings and embroider names or designs on them. I've done that at the request of my family members ... just watch out when your family and friends find out you do embroidery It's kind of like them finding out you have $$$$

I too had all those sample designs downloaded and wanted to use them. So, I embroidered them out, trying to stay in the same color range of greens, golds, red, and 1 accent color only. My oldest likes music, so music themes. The second, art. The third was into flowers and butterflies, and the fourth wanted animals. Of the 4, the music and flowers ones did the best, and especially the flowers one. There's a long stemmed yellow rose running 3/4 of the way up, and little pink roses on a square at the toe.

You could always intersperse with solid colors, but keeping the same color family really does help.

I didn't embroider their names on the stockings, and my kids GAVE THEM AWAY last year to someone in a FEMA trailer - so they would "have Christmas". I guess it's time to start making them again.
