Date: 1/16/07 8:24 AM Seems like there are quilters and beaders and scrappers.. but no groups involved in old fashioned sewing. What classes etc are out there? ------ Mom of five! |

Date: 4/28/10 9:28 AM I live in the Space Coast area...looking for a teacher to teach me to use my serger. I'm a new sewer also!
I'm also looking for insight to good repair shops, stores (besides Joanne's), etc. I do mostly garment sewing for my toddler son. ------ Single Mom to a toddler & sewing in the evenings! |

Date: 4/28/10 10:00 AM Hi! I live in Canada and we have no sewing programs at all on T V. I was wondering if other countries do.We don't even get sewing with nancy anymore.I loved that show. All the darn shows are about remodeling homes or makeovers. I am with bell dish services, most of are programming comes from the U S. Just wondering is all. |

Date: 4/29/10 10:45 PM I am in Central Florida (Brooksville), I would love to see a group form, or a gathering of some sorts. I am fairly new to this area and have not seen any kind of sewing classes offered, not at the shops, or the community colleges. Everything seems to be for quilters.....My ongoing struggle is with fit, I have been sewing for nearly 30 yrs, and I still struggle with fitting. |

Date: 4/30/10 6:41 AM If you live a comfortable driving distance from the northern edge of Orlando, I can heartily recommend a visit to The Sewing Studio in Maitland. They offer lots of classes (sewing, fitting, quilting, handbags, etc.) and stock plenty of things we usually have to find online. Recently, they've added Babylock machines to their inventory, too. If you need a reason to visit, they have a major sale every year on the 4th of July (it's either 30 or 40% off your entire purchase, can't remember which...) and on New Year's Day (40% off your entire purchase). On those sale days, I've chatted with people who have driven from Miami, Jacksonville and Ft. Myers to take advantage of the good deals. ------ “Never try to teach a pig to sing; it wastes your time and it annoys the pig.” -Robert Heinlein and Ann's father. Thanks for the reminder, Ann.
Where are we going, and what am I doing in this handbasket?

Date: 4/30/10 8:09 AM I also recommend the retreats that Louise Cutting (Cutting Corners) holds at a hotel in Winter Park a couple of times a year. She and Linda Lee host about 25 people with great food, fitting, and techniques.
I've met several very talented central Florida people at the retreat. Seems like there is a very good Bernina dealer that teaches in the area also...or is at least a good place to network.
Karla is right, The Sewing Studio is a great store. I liked Louise's old store better...but your area is lucky to still have an independent.
Also, check for locations of ASG meetings in your area. (asg.org) |
