Date: 5/16/07 1:04 PM I've looked in my sewing books for this and I find their explanations just too confusing!
I have this one RTW dress I got for my ODD that I just absolutely love and would love to copy and make more of...but I'm not sure how to do it. I'm a newbie so really, no explanation is too basic for me
Any links/help would be great. Thanks! |

Also, she taught a guest lecture class for one of my courses last semester at FIT and she was amazing. She had so many tips and hints to tell the difference between R2W and couture in garments in our museum collections that we are studying, and also tips for construction to give smoother, cleaner lines. She was a joy to listen to and I consider myself lucky!! Couture Sewing Techniques by her is also great!! |

Date: 5/17/07 4:39 PM The Aug/Sep 2005 issue of Threads has an article on how to make a pattern from RTW using masking tape.
Essentially, you cover each piece of the garment in masking tape, then pull it off in one huge piece. (For example, cover the sleeve in masking tape, then pull that off, cover the bodice front in masking tape, then pull that off). Snip areas where you need to add darts so it lays flat, add seam allowances, and voila, you've got your pattern pieces.
If you don't have this issue, maybe you can get it from your library. ------ Christina

PatternReview offers an on-line class on copying RTW. The classes rotate, so maybe you'll see it come up again soon.
HAVE FUN!!

Date: 5/28/08 8:47 PM Here is a link where somebody shows pictures of the tape copying method from Threads magazine. Pants are shown, but any garment, even slipcovers could be made the same way.
