I have an odd sort of question. As you may, or may not know Khalilah Ali has a line of plus size sewing patterns out. She models on the pattern envelope herself. I've noticed that she's lost a considerable amount of weight. Last night I saw an interview she did where she talks about having gastric bypass surgery. My odd question is now that she's definately no longer "plus sized" should she still model on the envelopes?

I thought I'd ask the question. I understand her wanting to continue to model for her own line of clothing but I don't see how having an average/slim body type modeling for plus size patterns is helping plus size women determine whether or not a particular pattern will flatter their figure.

I fell in love with the line after the first garment I made. I prefer KA over other designs currently available.

The surgery most likely was for health reasons. The weight does not come off quickly and she may now be a smaller plus size.

When she is no longer a plus size, she may have others model the plus line and she may model a slimmer version, we will have to wait and see.

I don't particularly like skinny models trying to model clothes that are too large for them. It doesn't give me an accurate view of how it would look on my figure. She still doesn't fit into that size 6 category as most moseld do. If she is size 12/14 or above, I think she can still effectively represent plus-sized women but she still has some meat on her bones, plus some fantastic muscles!

Regardless of her current size, she's still very good at designing for plus size figures! So even if she's modelling the "regular' size version of her patterns, it's still a good bet that the style will be flattering in plus sizes. Yes, it's an issue and I'm sure she and Simplicity have been discussing it at length but it doesn't bother me.

Does she actually design the garments? I just assumed she lent her name to the designs like celebrities do, or is she a real designer?

Just so you all will know, I saw an interview with her yesterday on GMA. She has a book out about weight, and stated that gastric bypass was NOT the procedure she had. She was afraid of the risks, so she chose the band. She liked the fact that it was less risky, can be adjusted, and it controls hunger.
I was wishing she'd talk about her patterns, but she was there to promote the book.
She really is a beautiful lady.
